Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot while giving a speech on a street in Nara, Nara Prefecture, On Thursday. He died after several hours of resuscitate. He was 67. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida strongly condemned the shooting.
A man shot Abe at around 11:30 local time (10:30 Beijing time) as he was making a campaign speech for liberal Democratic Party candidates for the upper house near a station in Nara city. Abe was shot and fell to the ground, suffering neck and chest injuries. He was transferred to the Hospital of Nara Prefectural Medical University. Abe’s wife, Akie Abe, was rushed to the hospital.
The Nara Prefectural Medical University Hospital announced that Abe died of excessive blood loss at 17:03 local time (16:03 Beijing time).
Japanese media, citing local police and fire authorities, said Abe was in cardiopulmonary arrest when he was rushed to hospital. The hospital said the gunshot wound was deep enough to reach the heart to cause blood loss.
Born in Tokyo on Sept. 21, 1954, Mr. Abe comes from a conservative political family. Abe first became prime minister in September 2006 and announced his resignation the following September, citing health reasons. Abe served as Prime minister again in December 2012 and was the longest-serving Japanese prime minister until he resigned in August 2020 due to health problems.
