On May 31, HMM issued a notice to enhance VGM validation. According to the notice, all containers loaded and unloaded at the wharf of Ningbo Port. If the declared VGM does not match the actual weight, a penalty will be imposed. Fines range from 1,000 to 30,000 yuan (about $150 to $4,400), depending on individual circumstances. The fine will be charged directly to the shipper.
According to IMO regulations, the weight difference between the VGM and the actual weight must be (1) less than 1 ton and (2) less than 5%. Otherwise, it cannot be loaded onto a ship.
So far, no rule changes have been made. This notice is intended to remind HMM customers of its importance to avoid ship delays or fines. Please be sure to submit the correct VGM data in a timely manner, bearing in mind that shippers who incorrectly declare weight will be liable for any loss or damage caused by non-compliance.
